The Nagpur South West Assembly constituency, a long-time bastion of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is one of the highly influential seats in the Vidarbha region. It will witness a rematch between Fadnavis and Prafulla Gudhade Patil in the 2024 Assembly election in Maharashtra.

Eying his sixth consecutive term, Fadnavis first secured a win from Nagpur West in 1999 when he defeated two-time MLA Vinod Gudhade Patil, who registered a win on the BJP ticket in 1990 and 1995, but later switched to the Congress. Vinod is the father of Prafulla Gudhade Patil.

The BJP leader emerged victorious in 2004 and later shifted to the Nagpur South West seat after the delimitation exercise. He has secured three consecutive wins in 2009, 2014 and 2019.

Devendra Fadnavis, a major political figure in Maharashtra, is looking for a convincing victory this time, amid speculations about his potential return as the chief minister.

Fadnavis and Prafulla Gudhade Patil were pitted against each other in 2014 when the BJP leader defeated the Congress candidate by more than 58,000 votes.

During the 2019 Assembly election in Maharashtra, the saffron party emerged as the single largest party, winning 105 of the 288 seats. At the time, the undivided Shiv Sena got 56 seats, while Congress and NCP managed 44 and 54 seats, respectively.

Despite the clear majority, the BJP and Shiv Sena alliance couldn't form the government and fell apart over the issue of the Chief Minister's post.

This led to the formation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). However, the then Uddhav Thackeray-led government collapsed after the Eknath Shinde-led camp rebelled against the Shiv Sena in June 2022, which resulted in an unprecedented split in the party.

In July, Ajit Pawar revolted against his uncle Sharad Pawar, splitting the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and joining the ruling Mahayuti alliance, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

In the 2024 polls, the Mahayuti (BJP, Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Ajit Pawar's NCP) is in a direct contest against the MVA, which includes Congress, NCP (SP) and Shiv Sena (UBT).

Polling Date

In Maharashtra, polling in all 288 seats, including Nagpur South West, is scheduled for November 20. The counting of votes is on November 23.

The seat, this time, has more than four lakh voters.
