Jaisalmer: The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has completed successful flight tests of the guided Pinaka weapon system during provisional staff qualitative requirements validation trials. The comprehensive evaluations occurred across multiple field firing ranges, including Pokhran.
The trials assessed crucial parameters, including range capabilities, precision, consistency and firing rates for multiple target engagement in salvo mode. The assessment involved 12 rockets from each production agency, launched from two modernised in-service Pinaka launchers.
Defence minister Rajnath Singh praised the successful trials, highlighting how this system will enhance the Armed Forces' artillery capabilities. Samir V Kamat, DRDO chairman, confirmed the system's readiness for army induction following completion of all required flight trials.
A defence source said, "From the launch of the Pinaka to hitting the target, monitoring was done using radar, electro-optical targeting systems, and telemetry systems. All systems of this rocket successfully met the set standards and destroyed the target with the highest accuracy. This rocket is named after Lord Shiva's bow, 'Pinak.' The Pinaka rocket system launches 12 rockets in 44 seconds, which means approximately one rocket is fired every 4 seconds."
The 214-calibre system features impressive specifications, with operational ranges from 7 to 90 kilometre across its variants.
