Varanasi: An FIR was lodged against a suspended inspector of Sarnath police station and a person impersonating as OSD of the chief minister on Thursday for looting Rs 41 lakh from gamblers on the intervening night of Nov 7 and 8.
They were booked under sections 319(2) (personation) and 309(4) (robbery) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and the Public Gambling Act.
According to reports, inspector Paramhans Gupta along with his friend Dharmendra Chaubey posing as CM's OSD arrived at Rudra Heights Apartment in Sarnath area to probe reports of alleged gambling activities.
The duo threated the gambling traders of legal action and extorted Rs 41 lakh from them.
After a video of the incident went viral on social media, the police took suo moto cognizance and lodged an FIR against the duo. Gupta was also placed under suspension.
Both are absconding since then and efforts are no to nab them, said Sarnath police station in-charge Vivek Kumar.
