Kanpur: Former Indian cricketer Jai Prakash Yadav opposed the ‘No Toss Policy' in under-23 cricket, asserting that it diminishes the enthusiasm of emerging bowlers, particularly medium pacers.
Jai Prakash, who is currently coaching the visiting Goa team competing against UP in Nayudu trophy, told TOI that the ‘No Toss' policy is ineffective. Host associations are presently avoiding risks by preparing flat wickets, which consistently disadvantage medium pacers.
Previously, before the ‘No Toss' policy, associations would prepare wickets according to their strengths whilst adhering to board guidelines.
The toss played a vital role then, with winning teams choosing to bat or bowl. Under the current ‘No Toss' policy, since visitors make the decision, host associations avoid preparing sporting wickets, he elaborated.
Discussing Goa cricket, JP acknowledged its progression despite the state's football-centric culture. Football matches attract substantial crowds, reflecting the sport's popularity amongst youth, he said.
"Cricket's appeal is growing, albeit with fewer enthusiasts compared to football. Limited training infrastructure poses another challenge. Regular rainfall near the coastline hampers outdoor practice sessions."
"Extended indoor practice isn't sustainable. We travelled to Rajasthan with our players for two months of outdoor training to enhance their ground skills," JP explained.
Goa's junior cricket remains developmental. Establishing strong senior teams requires robust junior programmes, as juniors aspire for senior positions whilst seniors strive to maintain their places. "Having played numerous matches in Kanpur, I recognise UP's accomplished junior teams performing admirably nationally."
Regarding Ranji Trophy formats, JP noted that whilst the old relegation system demanded performance for advancement, teams had limited exposure to top-tier opponents.
The current pool league system provides valuable opportunities to compete against superior teams, facilitating learning and experience.
