Udupi: Tourism department plans to develop Kamini Island, located close to the Blue Flag beach, Padubidri End Point, aiming to attract more visitors with eco-friendly initiatives.
Assistant director Kumar CU told TOI that, given the island's proximity to the Blue Flag-certified beach, all development will be around environmental sustainability. "We plan to enhance the area around the Kamini River and island with a hanging bridge, nature trails, and eco-friendly food courts featuring traditional cuisine. Visitors may soon reach the island via pedal boats or kayaking," he added.
The project is estimated to cost around Rs 3 crore to Rs 4 crore. Meanwhile, the footfall at the Blue Flag beach, Padubidri endpoint, has been decent so far. Vijay Shetty, manager of Padubidri Blue Flag Beach, mentioned that tenders for the food court and water sports were awarded and managed by private parties. Recently, three new coracles were introduced, and they seem to be popular with visitors. Additionally, three more shelters at the beach are expected to be ready by Nov 20.
He said, facilities at the Blue Flag Beach now accommodate up to 2,500-3,000 visitors per day, although attendance remains lower compared to other beaches in the district due to user fees and activity restrictions. "While initially, most visitors were from Mangaluru, now around 40% are from other districts, reflecting a shift in visitor demographics," Shetty observed.
Beach carnival in Padubidri
Shetty said that in an attempt to promote a healthy lifestyle, fitness and tourism, a Beach Carnival will be held on Nov 23-24, featuring the National Sea Swimming Championship and a sea marathon organised in association with the Padubidri JCI, which is celebrating its golden jubilee. Cultural events will be held at the main beach, with some sports events at the Blue Flag beach, endpoint. Emphasis will be on making all activities environmentally friendly, he added.
