The 2025 Ford Ranger boasts an appealing blend of comfort, capability, and power, but don’t look for bargain pricing.
What kind of vehicle is the 2025 Ford Ranger? What does it compare to?
The 2025 Ford Ranger is a midsize pickup truck that competes with the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado, and Nissan Frontier.
Is the 2025 Ford Ranger a good truck?
The 2025 Ford Ranger scores well in its segment thanks to its decent turbo power and broad lineup of trim levels. It’s a 5.6 on the TCC scale. (Read more about how we rate cars.)
What's new for the 2025 Ford Ranger?
Not much. A new Black Appearance Package adds blacked-out accents. Additionally, Ford drops three paint colors and adds three new ones.
Redesigned last year, the Ranger otherwise carries into 2025 unchanged. It’s available exclusively as a crew cab with a 5-foot bed, and all models wear the same handsome but unremarkable styling. Inside, the cabin has decent small-items storage and a big vertical touchscreen.
Rangers come standard with a 270-hp 2.3-liter turbo-4, which is more than adequate for most users. An available 2.7-liter turbo-4 ups the ante to 315 hp, which could be useful if you regularly tow or haul heavy loads. Either way, the Ranger comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission that generally behaves well aside from occasionally stumbling its way through the first few gears after setting off from a stop.
These trucks have a firm but controlled ride and light, accurate steering that makes them feel almost sporty.
Then there’s the Ranger Raptor, which is in its own league. It has a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 rated at 405 hp. That’s only part of its story, though. Underneath, look for a boulder-swallowing suspension with coil (rather than leaf) springs out back and chunky Fox shocks. It’s very capable—so much so that we might pick it over Ford’s own Bronco for off-road use. It’s a better value, after all.
Look for upward of 20 mpg combined with the turbo-4 engines, or just 17 mpg combined for the powerful Raptor.
Inside, the Ranger has decent space for a midsize pickup. Its cabin lacks the imaginative design and surface detailing you’ll find in many of its competitors, but it is functional and has good small-items storage. One small downside is that the rear bench seat folds upward as a single unit, which renders the area useless for storage and passengers at the same time. The standard 5-foot bed is pretty wide and it can be dressed up with factory-installed bedliners, LED lighting, and a power outlet.
How much does the 2025 Ford Ranger cost?
The Ranger starts at $34,575 for the base XL, which has a 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 17-inch alloy wheels, and, frankly, not too many other features. Figure at least $45,000 for an XLT with four-wheel drive and popular optional extras.
Where is the 2025 Ford Ranger made?
In Wayne, Michigan.
2025 Ford Ranger Styling
The 2025 Ford Ranger is handsome but not especially notable.
Is the Ford Ranger a good-looking truck?
It’s not bad, with a blocky, chunky exterior and a car-like cabin. We rate it at 6 out of 10; most competitors elicit stronger feelings.
The Ranger comes only as a crew cab, and it wears a broad front fascia with big grille surrounded by C-shaped headlights with integrated LED running lights even on the cheapest trim level. These trucks are pretty conventional when viewed from the side, though the big black plastic panel just behind the rear wheels looks a bit quirky.
Inside, the Ranger has a pleasantly forgettable dash. The base 10.1-inch touchscreen can be swapped out for a bigger 12.0-inch setup; either way, it’s mounted vertically and it absorbs most conventional controls. A handful of buttons and knobs for the climate and audio systems sit below. Ford’s a bit stingy about color combos inside, too, and no model wears the imaginative surface textures that you’ll find in the Tacoma and Frontier.
2025 Ford Ranger Performance
The 2025 Ford Ranger is reasonably powerful.
The 2025 Ford Ranger offers spirited performance and decent off-road ability even in its most basic form. It’s a 7 here. The Raptor would net another point for its all-around competence if rated separately.
Is the Ford Ranger 4WD?
Four-wheel drive is available. It’s a part-time system controlled via a knob on the center console. Ford offers a locking rear differential either as a line-item extra or with the FX4 package.
The Raptor is by far the most capable version. It has a taller suspension with Fox shocks at all four corners, plus 17-inch alloy wheels wearing all-terrain tires. It adds a locking front differential, too. These models manage to ride and handle the best of the pack thanks in part to rear coil springs rather than the leaf springs employed on all other trims. They lack the sports car-grade acceleration of the most powerful F-150 Raptors, but these mini-dinos are still plenty fun to drive.
How fast is the Ford Ranger?
The base 2.3-liter turbo-4 puts out 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, which is more than sufficient for most light-duty needs. Aided by a responsive 10-speed automatic transmission, it’ll zip to 60 mph in around 7.0 seconds. A hint of turbo lag away from a stop can be exacerbated by the gearbox’s occasional confusion in sorting through the lowest two or three cogs, which makes it somewhat hard to move away from a stop smoothly.
We’ve yet to drive the available 2.7-liter turbo-4, which puts out 315 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. It’s optional on XLT and Lariat trims.
Rangers can tow up to 7,500 pounds (except for Raptors, which are rated for 5,510 pounds), but you’ll have to order the factory Trailer Tow Package to net that figure. That package includes a trailer hitch and a wiring harness. Upgraded versions of that package add a trailer brake controller and a system that lets you use a dial on the center console to back up a trailer as though you’re using a computer game. There’s also a tow/haul mode.
We recently towed about 5,000 pounds with a base Ranger XL and found it to be a confident hauler. Rangers offer a maximum payload rating of 1,805 pounds, though models with four-wheel drive are rated to lug about 90 pounds less.
Underneath, most versions of the Ranger have an independent front suspension and a leaf-sprung solid axle out back. This setup furnishes a firm but comfortable enough ride, even when the pickup bed is completely empty (though there is some rear bounding typical of pickups). While the electric power steering has little in the way of road feel, it's direct and it centers itself nicely, which helps give the Ranger a somewhat nimble feel for a pickup truck.
2025 Ford Ranger Comfort & Quality
The 2025 Ford Ranger doesn’t have the nicest midsize pickup cabin.
The latest Ford Ranger has a good-sized bed out back, but its interior isn’t all that great. It’s a 6 out of 10 on the TCC scale.
Front-seat riders have bucket seats with a decent amount of manual or, optionally, power adjustments. The seats themselves have somewhat thin padding and neither the standard cloth nor the optional leather imparts a particularly high-end feel. Rear-seat riders will find pretty good space by midsize truck standards, an admittedly low bar. The rear seat back is bolt-upright. While the seat base folds upward, it’s a single unit. You can either have more space or rear-seat passengers, not both. Several competitors have a more convenient split rear seat base.
Base XL models have no shortage of hard, thin plastics lining the dash and door panels. XLT models toss in the occasional stitched and padded surface, but there’s nothing fancy here. Rangers we’ve driven have had so-so fit and finish, too.
Out back, the 5-foot bed is fairly wide, which means it can easily accommodate plywood sheets. Ford will happily add drop-in or spray-in bedliners, LED lighting, and a power outlet—for an extra cost. All but the base XL also have steps integrated into the bed to allow for easier loading and unloading.
2025 Ford Ranger Safety
The 2025 Ford Ranger includes basic crash-avoidance tech.
How safe is the Ford Ranger?
It hasn’t been tested by either the NHTSA or the IIHS, so we cannot assign the 2025 Ford Ranger a safety score.
This truck comes standard with basic features that include automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, and active lane control. Blind-spot monitors, rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera system, and adaptive cruise control are all optional. Ford’s trick BlueCruise hands-off tech isn’t available on the Ranger yet.
2025 Ford Ranger Features
The 2025 Ford Ranger is available in a wide number of trim levels, none of which are cheap.
The 2025 Ford Ranger lineup starts at a hefty $34,575, which buys a crew cab in XL trim with rear-wheel drive. It’s not totally basic as it has a vertically oriented 10.1-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and cruise control, but it’s not very lavish either. The lineup scores a 7 here thanks to having just enough features in base form plus its myriad combinations.
The lineup is covered by a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Unlike some rivals, Ford doesn’t include any maintenance.
Both the standard 10.1-inch touchscreen and the available 12.0-inch unit have the same software, which is easy to sort through. In our experience, the software can be quite laggy, however.
Which Ford Ranger should I buy?
Hold on tight. Simply adding four-wheel drive ups the price of a base XL by a staggering $3,645. Bolt on a trailer hitch, swap out vinyl floors for carpets, and spray in a bedliner, and Ford will want nearly $40,000 for one.
We think the better buy here is the XLT with its upgraded interior trim, tinted windows, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and wider range of options, though even then you’ll need to budget around $45,000 if you want a four-wheel-drive one with power-adjustable and heated front seats, automatic climate control, a 12.0-inch touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system.
Figure closer to $50,000 by the time you’ve added some of those features to the Lariat with its leather upholstery and push-button start. That’s right: it takes stepping up to the top trim level to ditch the switchblade-like key.
How much is a fully loaded Ford Ranger?
The Raptor is in a league of its own at $57,315, though mercifully these models come with just about everything Ford can bolt onto a Ranger.
2025 Ford Ranger Fuel Economy
The 2025 Ford Ranger can be somewhat thrifty if you’re conservative with the gas pedal.
Is the Ford Ranger good on gas?
It’s not at the top of its class, but the Ford Ranger nonetheless can realistically deliver upward of 20 mpg combined. It’s a 2 on the TCC scale.
While 2025 figures aren't yet available, the EPA fuel economy ratings should be unchanged from 2024. Rear-drive models with the 2.3-liter turbo-4 are the most efficient at 21 mpg city, 25 highway, 22 combined. Four-wheel drive dents those figures only slightly to 20/24/22 mpg. The 2.7-liter turbo-4 is a bit thirstier at 19/23/20 mpg.
Raptors are guzzlers. They get just 16/18/17 mpg by 2024 ratings.
