Slug: Cricket In Vadodara
Vadodara: The Baroda Cricket Association (BCA) stadium at Kotambi will host its first international match next month. The women's teams from India and the West Indies will play a three-match ODI series at the state-of-the-art stadium next month.
It was in 2019 that the BCA had hosted international matches last when the South African women's team had played three ODIs in the city. The last men's cricket match played in the city was an ODI between India and New Zealand in 2010.
The schedule for the three matches at Kotambi was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday. The matches are scheduled to take place on Dec 22, 24, and 27. The first two matches will be day and night matches, while the third one will be a day match. It is for the first time that an international day and night match will be played in the city.
Till now, domestic matches have been played at the stadium. Besides, it was also the venue for the practice sessions of Indian Premier League franchise Gujarat Titans. Finishing touches are being given to the stadium, and work on the connecting road will begin soon.
BCA president Pranav Amin told media persons that land for the broad road to the stadium had been acquired and that the tendering for the road would be done soon and the work would then start. He added that the association was also trying to ensure that the venue got into the international men's cricket calendar.
The association spent around Rs 200 crore on the stadium and additional amounts towards the pipeline to supply Narmada project water for the maintenance of the grounds as well as land for the approach road. Sources said that the total amount spent on the stadium may be around Rs 230 crore.
The stadium is designed to enhance the spectator experience, with ample seating, advanced technology, and excellent amenities for the players and the fans alike. The innovative design of the stadium allows the spectators a 360-degree view, ensuring they enjoy the game without needing to stand. The stadium has a capacity of around 40,000 spectators.
The stadium has five indoor full-length pitches and 17 outdoor pitches, providing ample training and playing opportunities for players. An underground water diffuser system enables the ground to be ready for play within an hour if it rains.
