Aditya Thackeray, a key leader of Shiv Sena (UBT), is actively campaigning in his Worli constituency ahead of the Maharashtra state election, which he describes as a fight for “Maharashtra’s pride.” In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Thackeray said, “We are fighting for the idea of Maharashtra, for the pride of Maharashtra that Eknath Shinde has damaged.”
Thackeray emphasised his commitment to local issues in Worli, mentioning that he and his team are directly engaging with residents to showcase their achievements.
Amid ongoing debates over the legitimate Shiv Sena faction, the upcoming assembly elections will play a key role in settling this debate.
Thackeray repeated that his camp is the legitimate party, claiming, “We are the real party; a thief doesn’t become the owner.” He further challenged Shinde, saying, “I challenge Eknath Shinde to contest without relying on my grandfather's name, our party name and symbol, or our legacy.” He also commented on BJP's performance, noting, “The BJP dropped to just nine seats without Uddhav Thackeray.”
Despite Uddhav Thackeray’s insistence, the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has not announced a chief ministerial candidate, which could cause trouble if MVA gets majority. Aditya, however, downplayed this, noting, “It won’t create issues. It's the Mahayuti which lacks a unified front and has no true alliance. Their goal is simply to loot Maharashtra. Our fight is for the people, not for seats or positions.”
On the possibility of formation of new alliances, he reflected on his faction’s separation from the BJP in 2019, saying, “We parted ways because the BJP broke its promise for the second time and aimed to eliminate us.” He also dismissed rumors about UBT joining hands again with the BJP, saying, “The BJP started that rumour. Now they have realised that without Uddhav Thackeray, they’re down to nine seats.”
Responding to allegations related to COVID-19 mismanagement, Thackeray criticised how the pandemic was handled in other states, contrasting Maharashtra’s efforts. “Thousands of bodies were seen floating in the Ganga, while people in Surat and Ahmedabad lacked oxygen and ambulance services. None of this happened in Maharashtra, yet the BJP tries to defame us,” Thackeray said.
He dismissed any anti-incumbency against him over the BDD Chawl redevelopment issue. Thackeray, in fact said that he is proud of the work he has done in this project. “Devendra Fadnavis performed the ground-breaking ceremony in 2016, but no work began until 2021. We restarted it, and the first tower is now ready. Keys will be handed over in the next 2-3 months, with the next phase underway,” he said.
Thackeray criticised Shinde’s faction for allegedly delaying the project to benefit private builders, adding that after a century, residents are finally receiving 500 sq ft homes, with “no anti-incumbency” against him.
