Ahmedabad: A 25-year-old Thaltej resident filed a complaint against an unknown person for fraud and criminal breach of trust after she lost Rs 1.36 lakh to cybercrooks operating a fraudulent work-from-home scheme.
The victim lodged her complaint at Bodakdev police station on Wednesday, detailing how she received a message in Sep regarding part-time employment. According to her police statement, the offer involved writing positive Google reviews for restaurants, promising Rs 150 per review with potential daily earnings of Rs 3,500, to be paid via UPI.
She began writing positive reviews for restaurants using the link provided by the fraudster after being convinced of the legitimacy of the scheme. The fraudsters then requested her bank information, which she provided.
They later directed her to a Telegram channel, promising 20% returns on investments. Initially, she received Rs 1,400 after investing Rs 1,000, and Rs 4,000 after investing Rs 3,000. When she transferred Rs 7,000, the fraudsters claimed their trading account was suspended due to a task error. She then made three additional transfers totalling Rs 1.29 lakh to different accounts specified by the cybercrooks.
Upon their requests for additional payments, she demanded a refund, but they ceased communication. She subsequently contacted the cyber crime helpline before formally registering her complaint on Wednesday.
