Billionaire Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will lead a new Department of Government Efficiency in the Cabinet of US President-elect Donald Trump, according to a statement by Trump shared by Musk on November 12.

“I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency ("DOGE"),” the statement read.

Musk and Ramaswamy’s task will be to dismantle government bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies that are essential to the "Save America" Movement, Trump said.

"This will send shockwaves through the system, and anyone involved in Government waste, which is a lot of people!" Musk was cited as saying in the statement.

The development comes after Trump, during the campaign trail, said his government efficiency effort would develop a plan to eliminate “fraud and improper payments,” conducting a “complete financial and performance audit” of the federal government.

Musk had last month predicted that he could cut at least $2 trillion from the US federal budget, though that would exceed the amount Congress spends annually on government agency operations, including defence.

The plan would likely require making significant cuts to popular entitlement programmes such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and veterans’ benefits, he had said.

The president-elect claimed that this task will become, potentially, 'The Manhattan Project' of the time (the Manhattan Project was a US government research and development programme during World War II aimed at building the first atomic bomb).

Trump asserted that Republican politicians have dreamed about the objectives of ‘DOGE’ for a very long time. And, therefore, to drive this kind of drastic change, the Department of Government Efficiency will provide advice and guidance from outside of government, and will partner with the White House and Office of Management and Budget to drive large-scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to government never seen before, Trump’s statement states.

In the statement, Trump said he looks forward to Musk and Ramaswamy making changes to the federal bureaucracy with an eye on efficiency and, at the same time, “making life better for all Americans.”

“We will drive out the massive waste and fraud which exists throughout our annual $6.5 trillion of government spending.”

This statement comes against the backdrop of the US government's last fiscal’s spending of more than $6.75 trillion, with more than $5.3 trillion of that coming from Social Security, health care, defence and veterans’ benefits.

The Trump-appointed duo is expected to work together to liberate the US economy, and make the US government accountable to "WE THE PEOPLE.”

“Their work will conclude no later than July 4, 2026 -A smaller Government, with more efficiency and less bureaucracy, will be the perfect gift to America on the 250th Anniversary of The Declaration of Independence. I am confident they will succeed!” Trump stated.
