Jaipur: A day after arresting Dev Kumar, a health inspector in the Adarsh Nagar zone of Jaipur Municipal Corporation Heritage (JMC-H), for accepting a bribe of Rs 6,000, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) revealed that he allegedly collected Rs 3,000 monthly from each of 45 sanitation workers under him, totalling 1.35 lakh every month, to clear their attendance.
The ACB's probe, initiated after a complaint from a sanitation worker, uncovered a deep-rooted system of exploitation.
It came up during the preliminary investigation that Dev Kumar regularly harassed them, demanding bribes to ensure their attendance was marked, salary payments were processed, and they received favourable postings.
"Exploiting sanitation workers and demanding bribes for attendance regularisation is a rampant practice in the JMC-H. We suspect the involvement of senior officials in facilitating this system. We are considering quizzing some JMC employees in this connection," an ACB official said. The ACB caught Dev Kumar red-handed on Tuesday morning while he was accepting a bribe in a public park. The agency has now expanded its investigation to examine the role of senior JMC-H officials, who are suspected of sharing the proceeds of the bribes. "Further questioning and evidence collection are underway," he added. tnn
