The Uttar Pradesh Police have arrested a man for allegedly cultivating cannabis at his Greater Noida apartment and selling it on the dark web. According to an ANI report, the accused has been identified as Rahul Chaudhary.

“In a joint operation by Narcotics Cell, Ecotech-1 and Beta, a youth named Rahul Chaudhary has been arrested. He was involved in the indoor cultivation of OG plants. As we know, weed is extracted from OG plants,” said DCP Greater Noida Saad Miya Khan.

Khan said that 80 plants, 2 kg ganja and several types of pesticides and insecticides were recovered from the apartment during the raid conducted at Panorama Society. Reportedly, the accused was arrested near the P-3 roundabout in the Beta-2.

The DCP told PTI that the accused had been cultivating cannabis for about six months and “was inspired by web series and crime dramas to get into the illegal cultivation of the contraband in his apartment.”

Khan further said that Chaudhary ordered seeds from a website and arranged for AC room temperature control with indoor lighting and other pesticides and insecticides.

“One plant would be ready in 100 to 110 days and the price of each plant would be between Rs 5.000-7,000. Until now, he has sold 10 to 20 plants to different customers on the dark web at roughly Rs 50,000-60,000... There are a total of 80 plants and chemical pesticides, so its price is more than Rs 50 lakh,” Khan added.

The Noida incident comes on the heels of a Bengaluru couple's arrest for growing ganja in their balcony garden. The duo shared videos of their garden on social media, which led to their arrest. A case has been filed against Sagar Gurung (37) and Urmila Kumari (38) under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act for allegedly attempting to cultivate cannabis for sale.

The cultivation of cannabis in the country is prohibited under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act 1985 and it comes under the jurisdiction of state governments.

Being caught in possession of cannabis is considered an offence under this act. However, it is permitted for medical, scientific, industrial, and horticultural purposes.

There is a prescribed punishment for carrying cannabis, depending on the quantity. It includes a minimum imprisonment of up to 6 months, a fine of Rs. 10,000, or both, while the maximum prescribed punishment is rigorous imprisonment for up to 10-20 years, a fine of Rs. 1-2 lakh, or both.
