Silchar: Two road accidents in the Cachar district of Assam on Monday claimed the lives of six people.
Sources said five passengers, including four members of a family, lost their lives in an accident on Silchar-Kalain road in the Ranighat area of Cachar district when an autorickshaw in which they were travelling collided head-on with a pickup van at around 11:30 am. While the autorickshaw was on its way to Silchar, the pickup van was coming from the opposite direction. The force of the collision left the autorickshaw completely twisted.
The deceased have been identified as Zakir Uddin (54), his wife Rezia Begum (46), their son Dilwar Hossain (28), their daughter Rehana Begum (24), and neighbour Tahir Uddin (40). The name of the injured autorickshaw driver is not known yet. The deceased were residents of Bhairabpur in the Karigirah area of Cachar district.
Local residents and police rushed to the scene shortly after the accident to rescue the victims. Cachar superintendent of police Numul Mahatta arrived at the scene upon receiving the news. The victims died while being rushed to the hospital, sources said.
