Udupi: Shankaranarayana police in Udupi booked two persons under the Arms Act, for allegedly hunting a porcupine. Police said on Oct 3, a case was reported involving Basava, a resident of Amparu village in Kundapur, after he allegedly brought porcupine meat illegally into his residence, and stored it in the refrigerator. Upon investigation, it was found that Basava, with the help of Abbu Ahmad, a resident of Amparu village, hunted the porcupine using a licensed SBML gun, registered in Basava's name.
A case was booked for violating the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Since the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of Shankaranarayana police station and involved a firearm, and the gun's licensed condition were breached, the forest department requested that legal action be taken against the accused under Section 25 of the Arms Act. The firearm and license were submitted to Shankaranarayana police station for further action as per court orders, based on which a case was registered.
