Chennai: From idle CCTV cameras and dark spots due to dysfunctional street lights to unsafe bus stands, late-night alcohol sales, inefficient garbage removal, and unsafe school zones these are some of the security concerns faced by residents in Poonamallee and surrounding areas.
Many raised these issues during a public interaction organised by the Avadi police commissionerate at a marriage hall in Poonamallee on Sunday. There were more than 300 residents and police officers were in attendance. Avadi police commissioner K Shankar, MLA A Krishnaswamy, and municipal chairman Kanchana were also present.
Public safety was the main concern raised by locals, who voiced frustration over malfunctioning and broken CCTV cameras that left several areas in Poonamallee and nearby neighbourhoods vulnerable to crime.
A resident of Thirumazhisai, Arun Kumar M, stressed the need for increased police patrolling, especially during night hours. "People use bus stops and residential areas to drink at night. CCTV cameras don't work in most places," he said.
Residents highlighted safety issues at bus stands in Nazrathpet and Thirumazhisai, which lack adequate lighting and maintenance. "The halts near schools and colleges are used by tipplers at night, making commutes unsafe for women," said a resident of Thirumazhisai, Meghala.
Concerns were also raised about unauthorised liquor sales, with some shops in Avadi, Poonamallee, and Thirumazhisai reportedly selling alcohol early in the morning and late at night.
There are sanitation issues too. A resident of Poonamallee, Jayakumar M, said that while streets are regularly swept, waste collection remains inconsistent.
The need for speed breakers near school zones was also pointed out. Commissioner Shankar assured attendees that the police would take necessary steps to address the issues.
