Chandigarh: The Punjab vigilance bureau (VB) has registered a corruption case against the assistant labour commissioner of Hoshiarpur and a staffer in his office for taking a bribe of Rs 30,000.
While Alka Sharma, computer operator in the office of Harpreet Singh (PCS), was caught red-handed, the latter is absconding.
A local court has remanded Sharma in a 14-day judicial custody. A VB spokesperson said the case was initiated following a complaint lodged by a jeweller in Kashmiri Bazaar in Hoshiarpur.
Rohit Chauhan alleged he had recently renovated his shop and subsequently received a notice from the assistant labour commissioner's office.
During his visit, Sharma informed him of “a substantial potential fine” but suggested she could help “resolve” the issue by speaking with her superior, Singh.
The complainant said Sharma took the notice to Singh's office and Chauhan was also called in.
There, Singh allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 30,000 to dismiss the notice.
Chauhan recorded the bribe demand conversation and submitted it to the bureau.
