Aizawl: At least 68 pigs died of ASF in Mizoram on Monday. A remote village in Siaha district, Lopu, alone accounted for 61 casualties. Thirteen pigs were culled in Kolasib and Serchhip districts.
This comes at a time when the state was seeing a considerable decline in pig deaths. On Sunday, two deaths were recorded in two villages of southern Mizoram's Lunglei district. No pigs were culled.
Animal husbandry & veterinary officials, said the latest death toll may be a cumulative figure as Lopu is located in the southern tip of the state.
The overall pig casualty has risen to 14,604 since the first ASF victim was confirmed at Leithum village in Champhai district bordering Myanmar on Feb 9. The officials said 254 villages were declared as infected as of Monday.
The number of pigs culled because of illness and to prevent further spread of the porcine disease has touched 23,903 to date.
