Varanasi: Cash worth Rs 40 lakh was lootedfrom gamblers allegedly by a person clad in a police uniform, accompanied by another person posing as a journalist, from an apartment in Sarnath area under same police station on the night of Nov 7.
Taking note of the news going viral on social media, of police commissioner Mohit Agrawal on Sunday said no complaint had been made by anyone in this connection so far. "But in view of the news going viral on social media, DCP Varuna zone has been assigned to probe into the matter and station officer of Sarnath police station, Paramhans Gupta, has been attached to police lines until completion of probe," said the CP.
The viral reports claimed that on Nov 7 night, two individuals, one posing as a policem the other as a journalist, raided a flat in an apartment in Sarnath, where some businessmen were found gambling.
After threatening them, the duo collected about Rs 41 lakh and left the apartment with the cash in two bags. None of the gamblers reported the matter to police.
