Udupi: A man from West Bengal allegedly lost Rs 4.1 lakh after attempting to book a cab in Udupi through an online site. In his complaint, he reported that around 1.30pm on Nov 7, he searched for car rentals on Google and selected a website named Shakti Car Rentals.
Shortly after, a person identifying himself as Rohit Sharma contacted him and directed him to visit the Shakti car rentals website to pay a registration fee of Rs 150 for a booking token. Following these instructions, the complainant attempted to pay the amount via his Canara Bank debit card, but no OTP was received. He then tried his State Bank of India credit card, yet still received no OTP, suggesting the payments did not go through.
When he informed Rohit Sharma, he was told to pay the driver the amount upon the car's arrival. However, at 1.47pm, the complainant received bank messages indicating that Rs 3.3 lakh was debited from his SBI credit card and Rs 80,056 from his Canara Bank debit card, totalling Rs 4.1 lakh. The complainant alleged that he was deceived into paying money through a fraudulent link under the guise of booking a rental car. A case has been registered at Udupi Town police station.
