Coimbatore: The city cybercrime police on Friday registered a case against unidentified online fraudsters for duping a 50-year-old man from Selvapuram of 77.40 lakh.
According to a police officer, Vinoth, a marketing executive from Selvapuram, got a call from a stranger in September 2023, stating that he was a staffer of a private online trading firm and would help him earn crores of rupees in online trading.
"The stranger sent a link to Vinoth's WhatsApp and asked him to download the trading firm's mobile application. Vinoth followed his directions and installed the app on his mobile phone. He invested 77.40 lakh in 12 transactions between September and October last year and the mobile app showed a profit of 10 crore in Vinoth's accounts. Vinoth attempted to transfer the amount, but in vain. He then realized that it was a digital setup and that he was cheated," the officer said.
Vinoth asked the fraudsters to return his amount. "They, however, asked him to pay more to get back his investment of 77.40 lakh," the officer said.
Vinoth subsequently lodged a complaint with the city cybercrime police, who registered a case against the online fraudsters on Friday and formed a special team to trace their whereabouts. Further investigation is on.
