Gurgaon: The Urban Square near the Kanhai intersection, which recently received a makeover with a walking track, seating arrangements, and a selfie point amid green spaces, will soon be completed with solar lights, aiming to make the recreational area more welcoming for visitors.
As part of this initiative, 72 solar lights will be installed at an estimated cost of Rs 12 lakh. GMDA has prepared a proposal, which is currently awaiting approval from the CEO.
Earlier this year, GMDA transformed an underutilised 1,600 sqm land parcel along the slip road connecting Sector 44 with Ardee City Chowk into an urban square.
The Urban Square is part of a larger Rs 1.9 crore project to redevelop Kanhai Chowk, aimed at improving pedestrian safety and enhancing traffic flow in the area.
Previously, the site was an eyesore, often used for storing construction materials and parking heavy machinery, making it inaccessible and unattractive for public use. "We will install solar streetlights at Urban Square to ensure that this open green space remains welcoming and secure for visitors during the evening hours, especially during the winter season. These lights are cost-effective and require little maintenance. Moreover, they will help prevent anti-social elements from gathering in the area and causing a nuisance. The proposal has been submitted to the authority for approval," said R.D. Singhal, chief general manager, mobility division of GMDA.
Kanhai Chowk connects sectors 44, 45, and 52, where traffic from Millennium City Centre, Golf Course Road (extension), Ambedkar Road, Sohna Road, St. Thomas Marg, and Golf Course Road merges. With many gated communities, schools, and markets nearby, the junction experiences heavy traffic flow and pedestrian movement.
Urban Square can accommodate up to 50 people at a time and can be used for various leisure activities. GMDA has also installed a water pipeline to maintain the greenery.
