Gurgaon: A 19-year-old grocery delivery worker died on Friday after he was rammed by a canter truck in Sector 31. The driver fled the scene, abandoning the truck.
Samir Umra, a resident of Mewla Maharajpur, was travelling from Sector 28 to Sector 45 to deliver groceries when his bike was hit by the canter. He and his bike were dragged around five meters, and he died on the spot, according to the police.
"Around 8 am, Samir picked up groceries from a store in Sector 28 and was on his way to deliver them in Sector 45. While driving through Sector 31, a canter truck coming from the opposite direction collided with Samir's bike, dragging them a few meters," said inspector Sangram Singh of Sector 31 police station. The inspector added that after the accident, the driver attempted to reverse the truck to escape. However, as locals began gathering, he abandoned the vehicle and fled.
Locals alerted the police, and a team arrived at the scene, moving the body to the morgue.
"We have seized the canter truck. The driver will be identified and arrested soon," inspector Singh stated.
Based on a complaint filed by the deceased's family, a case has been registered against the driver under Sections 106 (causing death due to negligence) and 281 (rash driving on a public way) of BNS .
In another incident, a 35-year-old labourer, Om Prakash, died after he was allegedly hit by an unknown vehicle while crossing the road at Sikri in Faridabad on Wednesday night.
The deceased's brother, Mohanlal Yadav, lodged a complaint at the Sector 58 police station.
Yadav said he and Om Prakash had recently migrated to Faridabad from Bihar in search of work and had started working as labourers. On Wednesday, the brothers went to work at Shahpur Road in Sikri.
"Om Prakash was returning home with his co-worker, Mukesh, when an unknown car hit him while he was crossing NH 44 near Jhilmil Dhaba in Sikri. Mukesh alerted me over the phone, and I immediately reached the accident spot. We rushed Om Prakash to Ballabgarh Civil Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival," Mohanlal told police.
"We are reviewing CCTV footage from cameras near the accident spot to identify the driver," said ASI Krishan Kumar.
