Mumbai Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) Surpasses 630,000 Passengers in First Month

Mumbai, 9th November 2024: The Mumbai Metro Line 3, also known as the Aqua Line, has transported over 630,000 passengers in its first month, averaging 145,756 riders weekly. The line, connecting key locations including Aarey JVLR and Bandra Kurla Complex, was launched on October 7. As Mumbai’s first underground metro, it has alleviated road traffic by providing a quicker and more affordable commute.
An official post on the Mumbai Metro 3 handle noted: “Aqua Line’s first month: 633,209 passengers. Mumbaikars opted for #MetroLine3 to reduce traffic congestion and positively impact the environment.”
The full 33.5-km Metro 3 corridor is expected to serve 1.3 million daily passengers upon completion. However, current ridership on the 12.44-km stretch between Aarey JVLR and Bandra Kurla Complex is below expectations. According to reports, 612,913 passengers have used the line so far.
The highest ridership was recorded on October 13, the first Sunday after the metro’s commercial launch, with 27,108 passengers. The busiest routes on weekdays are between Bandra Kurla Complex and Marol Naka, as well as SEEPZ and Marol Naka, making Marol Naka the busiest station. The intersection with the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar metro line has increased daily commuters by approximately 4,000.
Currently, MMRC operates nine trains on the Aqua Line, with a 7.30-minute interval between services. If demand continues to rise, this interval may be reduced to 6.40 minutes. The metro has also introduced online ticket sales through its website, though the launch of the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) has been delayed until December 2024.
