Gaya: A young woman attempted self-immolation by pouring petrol on herself on Saturday after the family of a young man refused to honour their commitment to accept her as his bride once she turned 18. She was admitted to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital with severe burn injuries.
SHO of Wazirganj police station, Venkateshwar Ojha, said, "A case has been lodged based on the statement of the young woman's mother. Police are conducting an investigation into the matter for further action."
Both families run vegetable shops. The young woman had been in a relationship with the young man for around two-and-a-half years. After assurances from his family, she began to consider him her husband, even applying ‘sindoor' in his name. She also got a tattoo of his name and photo on her hand and shared several social media reels referring to him as her husband.
On her 18th birthday, she went to the young man's house, expecting the family to fulfill their promise of marriage. However, she was allegedly slapped and pushed out by family members. The following morning, she returned near their shop with a bottle of petrol and poured it over herself and set herself on fire with a lighter. Bystanders managed to extinguish the flames and contacted the police, who admitted her to the hospital.
