Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Friday allowed seven students suspended by the Burdwan Medical College and Hospital on ragging allegations to attend classes. However, the seven students will remain barred from college hostels. The HC will hear their plea on Nov 11.
Justice Jay Sengupta, in an interim order, said that the students can attend their classes and can also approach the local police station if they are stopped from doing so. On Sept 11, some students from Burdwan Medical College and Hospital accused Isha Pal and six others of ragging. Following this complaint, the college council decided to ban the seven from the college and hostel.
Challenging this decision, they approached the HC. Kalyan Banerjee, the lawyer for the suspended students, argued on Friday, saying, "The charges of ragging have not been disclosed to the students. How can the authorities unilaterally ban them from entering the college? Is action taken just based on a complaint? This is a threat culture."
Earlier, on Oct 22, the coordinate bench of the Calcutta High Court also stayed the suspension of 51 junior doctors from RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The doctors were suspended after an internal inquiry committee found them responsible for promoting a culture of intimidation and threats within the hospital. The HC ruled that the suspension could not go through without the approval of the state govt or the health department.
