Noida: Noida International Airport (NIA), which seeks to meet at least 50% of its energy needs from renewable sources to become India's first net-zero emissions airport, has recently signed a Rs 550-crore agreement with Tata Power for an on-site solar plant and wind energy.
Under the two power purchase arrangement, Tata Power's arm Tata Power Trading Company Ltd (TPTCL) will supply 10.8MW of wind power to the airport with assets from Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL). TPREL will also develop, operate, and maintain a 13MW onsite solar power capacity to contribute to the airport's overall energy needs.
Tata Power will also undertake the development of critical dry utilities, including essential electrical infrastructure, and provide operation and maintenance (O&M) services for the infrastructure over 25 years to meet Noida airport's smart energy requirements.
"By sourcing more than half of our energy needs from renewable sources, we are taking decisive action towards a more sustainable future. This agreement reflects our long-term vision for Noida International Airport to become a leader in environmentally conscious airport operations," Noida International Airport CEO Christoph Schnellmann said.
Tata Power, which currently generates 6,150 MW of clean energy, is committed to achieving carbon neutrality before 2045. Officials said the model of renewable energy integration could be replicated across the country's expanding airport infrastructure.
CEO and MD of Tata Power Praveer Sinha said the "collaboration will support the development of net-zero airports" for a greener future.
The first phase of Noida Airport, scheduled to start passenger operations by April next year, will handle 12 million passengers annually.
