Koraput: The swimming pool at Jeypore's integrated sports complex has been non-operational for five months, affecting over 150 young swimmers enrolled under the state govt's pay and play scheme. The facility, inaugurated by former chief minister Naveen Patnaik in March, operated briefly from May before closing in early June due to motor system failures.
"My son was very enthusiastic about learning swimming and had progressed to level 2. Unfortunately, the classes have been on hold for the past five months," said Sunil Kumar, a parent of one of the affected students. The program, which charged a monthly fee of Rs 500, had attracted students aged between 6 and 14.
"It's very disappointing that the swimming classes were stopped within a few weeks of its opening. Children were very eagerly attending the classes. Steps should be taken for early commencement of classes," said Kapilendra Singhlal, a parent.
"Without classes, the equipment and other items used in the swimming pool are slowly getting damaged which is a wastage of public money," said Rajendra Gouda, another parent.
"I was very excited for the swimming classes but unfortunately it stopped midway," said nine-year-old K Aryan, a student.
District sports officer Gyanjeet Tripathy said three of the pool's four motors have been repaired and they hope to restart classes soon.
Local MLA Tara Prasad Bahinipati called for immediate action and said, "The govt should ensure that the pool is made operational at the earliest."
The Rs 26-crore sports complex, built on 12 acres, features:
- 75-meter swimming pool
- 400-meter running track
- Football ground
- Indoor stadium
- Gymnasium
- Tennis and volleyball courts
- Administrative building
