New Delhi: A 46-year-old man has been arrested by Delhi Police's crime branch for the murder of his brother-in-law over a business dispute in northeast Delhi's Khajuri Khas area.
Police got a PCR call at 6.20pm on Sunday at Khajuri Khas police station regarding the shooting. "The victim, identified as 35-year-old Hemant Kumar, was fatally shot during a Bhaiya Dooj gathering at his mother-in-law's residence in Sonia Vihar," a senior police officer said.
The accused, Ali Hassan alias Ajay Verma, had a history of disputes with Hemant, the officer added.
According to the police, Hassan arrived at the scene and pressured Hemant to withdraw a case against him. During the argument, Hassan allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot Hemant multiple times before fleeing.
Hemant suffered two bullet injuries, one in the head and another on the left side of his chest. He was immediately rushed to a hospital but was declared dead.
Delhi Police's crime branch caught Hassan near the MCD office in Welcome.
He later told police that he and Hemant were related through their wives, who are sisters. The two men were business partners in the garland-making industry, but their partnership soured in 2019 over financial disputes, leading to a separation.
Hemant's wife filed a case against Hassan in Sept 2024 after which the couple faced intimidation from the accused.
On the day of the incident, the situation escalated during a Bhaiya Dooj gathering, resulting in the shooting.
DCP (crime branch) Sanjay Kumar Sain disclosed that the accused had planned to eliminate two other persons right after committing the crime. Police also recovered a sophisticated pistol and two live cartridges.
