Dibrugarh: Several people, mostly police personnel, sustained injuries in a clash between a crowd from Jalan Nagar Tea Estate and security personnel in Dibrugarh on Tuesday morning. Tensions escalated into violent confrontations when authorities permanently closed a gateway connecting the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) to the tea estate.
To control the situation, the police used tear gas to disperse the crowd as tensions ran high. In response, protesters threw glass bottles, bricks, and stones at the police, causing further chaos. During the clashes, additional SP Nirmal Ghosh was hit in the face, and several other police personnel sustained injuries from objects hurled by the protesters.
The protest stemmed from the sudden closure of a gate at AMCH that provided access to the Jalan Nagar Tea Estate. The gate, known as Alubari Gate, was permanently shut on Tuesday morning. An excavator was used to dig up and block the gate entrance, prompting protests from the tea garden residents.
Authorities said the step was taken due to the proliferation of country liquor dens in the Alubari area, adding that incidents of intoxication-related brawls had been on the rise, affecting the atmosphere of the AMCH campus.
“There were orders from the district administration to shut down the gate because of illegal activities in the area. At least 8-9 police personnel were injured in the stone pelting,” additional SP Nirmal Ghosh said.
