Guwahati: All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) has renewed its push to honour Bhupen Hazarika’s contributions to the Assamese society and culture on the occasion of the 13th death anniversary of legendary artist.
Aasu raised four demands — inclusion of the maestro’s creations in school curriculum, establishing an international standard research centre in his name, naming the Guwahati railway station after him and establising chairs in his name at state universities.
Paying tribute to the legend, Aasu chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya said, “Since his death we have been raising demands for including his creations in school curriculum to encourage the generations to come.”
Aasu has been planning to translate 100 songs of Bhupen Hazarika to Bodo language and discussions with All Bodo Students’ Union has been going on, Bhattacharya said.
Aasu president Utpal Sarma also regretted govt’s apathy in immortalising Hazarika’s contributions to the Assamese society. “We realise the work govt should have done remains incomplete after so many years. People of the state dream of a cultural research centre at his ‘samadhi kshetra’, but nothing has progressed yet,” Sarma added.
