Ranchi: Chhath festival, spanning four days and dedicated to worshipping the Sun God and nature, commenced on Tuesday with the traditional Nahay Khaye ceremony. Nahay Khaye ceremony sets the tone for this spiritual observance, which culminates by offering prayers to the rising Sun.
On this day, devotees prepare traditional dishes comprising pulse, rice, and bottle gourd as part of the ceremonial offerings.

The first day saw devotees participating in sacred bathing rituals, considered essential for physical and spiritual cleansing.
The ceremony encompasses bathing followed by the preparation of traditional offerings including thekua, kheer, and fruits, which are presented to the Sun God during the subsequent festival days.
Priya Kumari, a devotee said, “This is the most important day for us. We believe that by following the Nahay Khaye ritual with utmost devotion, our homes are blessed with prosperity and health. The holy bath not only purifies us physically but spiritually as well.”
She further added, “The festival is a time for devotees to pray for the well-being and prosperity of their families and loved ones.”
The Nahay Khaye ritual serves as a significant communal gathering. Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Bariatu, said, “Chhath Puja is a time for family and friends to come together. We start the festival by cleaning ourselves and our surroundings, making sure everything is pure for the rituals that follow.”
The observance, particularly amongst women participants, involves strict fasting and religious discipline.
Anita Devi, a resident of Lalpur, said, “I have been observing the festival for more than two decades. Every year, it strengthens my faith and connection to our traditions.”
Anita further added, “The fast is not easy at all, but it is done with love and faith. We offer our prayers for the health and happiness of our children and for the safety of our loved ones.”
