RAJKOT: A 26-year-old sanitation worker has been arrested in Rajkot for sexually assaulting a seven-year-old girl. The accused worked alongside the victim's mother at a private hospital and had gained their trust.
The victim's mother, also a sanitation worker, filed a complaint at University police station on Tuesday. She said she treated the accused as her brother and had given him access to her home. The mother often brought her daughter to the hospital, which led to the accused getting familiar with the child.
The offence in question came to light when the mother saw a plastic container used in the hospital at home. On questioning her, the girl revealed that the accused had assaulted her, leaving her bleeding. She also said he had committed a similar assault earlier.
Assistant commissioner of police (West Zone) Radhika Bharai told reporters, "The accused raped the girl two times when her mother was not home. We have detained the accused and have registered an offence under the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act."
The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault
