Coimbatore: A minor fire broke out at CIT Institute of Technology on Avinashi Road here on Tuesday. It was promptly extinguished after a fire tender, stationed near the Govt Medical College was rushed to douse the flames.
The fire had broken out around 1pm in the principal's chamber. Initially, smoke was detected from an air conditioner, shortly after which a fire broke out. Thick black smoke was seen emanating from the first floor of the building.
District fire officer P Pulukandi said, "We had parked the fire tender near the Govt Medical College in view of the chief minister's visit. On receiving information, we rushed to the college and put out the fire within ten minutes."
The officer added that a short circuit in the air conditioner likely caused the fire.
