Surat: A 26-year-old doctor at a govt health centre in the city allegedly died by suicide by jumping into the Mindhola River near Titva village in Tapi district.
The body of Dr Divyesh Gamit, who was working at a health centre run by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), was fished out from the river on Tuesday. He allegedly jumped to his death on Sunday.
Police did not recover any note from the spot. "The exact details are yet to be ascertained, but preliminary information suggests that Gamit was in a relationship with a woman and objection by his family could be a reason behind the extreme step," said an official at Valod police station.
Gamit, an MBBS, was identified from an identity card recovered from his pocket. Police also found an ID card of GMERS Medical College in Himmatnagar.
Investigation revealed that he was last seen on Sunday evening before he went missing from his Surat home.
Gamit left his house without informing his parents. However, he called his brother Ritvik, who is preparing for competitive exams in Gandhinagar, and told him to take care of their parents. Ritvik got anxious and informed his parents about the call. Gamit's father went to search for him towards Bardoli, but he was not found.
In the evening, Ritvik received a message from Gamit that his car was parked near Bajipura bypass. "He is suspected to have jumped into the river after sending the message. His body surfaced on Tuesday morning," said police.
Gamit was employed on contract at the Health and Wellness Centre of SMC in Dindoli. "He was self-medicating and taking anti-depressant medicines for the past few weeks. The reason behind his condition is not clear," claimed an SMC officer.
