Chennai: After evading arrest for a month, a 32-year-old woman was apprehended from a hideout in Sholavaram on Saturday on charges of killing her husband with a hammer during a domestic dispute.
K Saraswathy was arrested by the Avadi city police for the murder of her husband, G Karunakaran, 34, an autorickshaw driver.
The incident occurred on Sept 27 at their home in Gandhi Nagar, Sholavaram, when an argument over Karunakaran's alcoholism and financial negligence turned violent.According to police, when Karunakaran returned home drunk and physically assaulted Saraswathy, an argument broke out between them.
As he continued to hit her, she retaliated by striking him with a hammer.
After the attack, she helped get him to a hospital but fled the scene fearing arrest. Karunakaran was transferred to Govt Stanley Hospital, where he died on Oct 5. Following his death, police upgraded the initial attempt to murder charge to murder. All along, Saraswathy managed to evade arrest by moving between different towns.
Police reached out to her friends and family members to ascertain her whereabouts and recently received a tip-off about her hideout. "She was shifting from one relative's house to another," said a police officer. On Saturday, a special team of Sholavaram police picked up Saraswathy from a hideout where she was holed up. She has been remanded in judicial custody after being produced before a magistrate. Further investigation is underway.
