Dibrugarh: Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal attended the final match of a football tournament at the Balijan South Playground in Dibrugarh on Saturday. The match featured local favourites Young Boys FC and Balijan South FC.
The tournament was organised by the ‘North Balijan Chah Bagicha Chah Community Morcha’ in collaboration with the ‘Dinjan Mandal Chah Community Morcha’.
During his address, Sonowal highlighted the transformative impact of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership on sports in India, particularly in Assam.
“Over the last two years, Assam and the Northeast have witnessed significant transformation along with the rest of India, under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since the beginning of the BJP regime, Assam’s sports sector has achieved remarkable success,” he said.
Sonowal added that Assam has emerged as a crucial sports hub due to the successful organisation of numerous national and international tournaments.
“Football, a beloved sport in Assam, has seen substantial growth, marked by events such as the FIFA under-17 World Cup hosted in Guwahati. Many of our football players have achieved remarkable success nationwide,” Sonowal said, advocating for a robust policy to sustain the momentum.
He praised the ‘Khel Maharat’ initiative, which he believes has created an excellent platform for budding athletes.
