New Delhi: Environment minister Gopal Rai on Friday thanked Delhiites for "largely refraining from bursting firecrackers on Diwali", which prevented the air quality index (AQI) from slipping into the ‘severe' category. Rai also flagged off 200 mobile anti-smog guns, which will sprinkle water in three shifts.
"Thanks to the responsible actions of many residents who avoided using firecrackers, we managed to avoid a ‘severe' AQI reading," Rai said. He added that while most residents adhered to the ban, some still burst crackers. "I am hopeful that we all Delhiites will be able to convince them by next year to participate in our campaign of cleaning Delhi's air."
Inaugurating the first mobile anti-smog gun at the Delhi secretariat, Rai said AAP govt had deployed 200 mobile anti-smog guns across all 70 assembly constituencies to curb dust and improve air quality.
"Given the current AQI levels, we have launched a water-sprinkling campaign across Delhi's roads using 200 mobile anti-smog guns. Each constituency will be covered by two mobile units, while additional guns have been stationed at pollution hotspots. Water spraying will take place continuously across three shifts to maximise the impact," said Rai.
The minister added that special spraying would be carried out at pollution hotspots. "A dedicated coordination team has been set up to focus on these areas, and MCD's deputy commissioner has been directed to regularly visit them with all officers concerned," said Rai.
"If you notice dust rising anywhere, especially at construction sites, please take a photo and upload it on the Green Delhi app. Similarly, if you see fire or smoke nearby, report it through the app. The department concerned will take swift action," he appealed to Delhiites.
