Rajkot: Utter lawlessness in the city was on a glaring display on the night of Diwali two speed demons crashed their luxury cars into vehicles on the roads teeming with people, leaving nine people dead, in two separate incidents.
Police said a man driving a high-end SUV crashed the vehicle into five vehicles including three cars near Dhareshwar Dairy in Kotecha Chowk on Kalavad Road, leaving six people injured. The road was heavily crowded as a large number of people were out for Diwali festivitis.
One of the victims, Satyam Solanki, registered a complaint against the car driver at Gandhigram police station under BNS sections 110 (criminal attempt to commit culpable homicide), 281 (rash and negligent driving), and the Motor Vehicle Act.
According to the complaint, the driver seemed to be drunk. The car hit two bikes and three cars.
Those injured were identified as Kevin Solanki, Deep Kodavala, Lakhman Bhurabhai, Leelaben Chatrala, and one more person. They are under treatment at the civil hospital.
When contacted, Jagdish Bangarwa, deputy commissioner of police (zone-2), said, "We have detained the accused for questioning. Prima facie, he was drunk, but we will confirm this after the medical test."
The police also took the help of a forensic team to ascertain the speed of the vehicle and reviewing the CCTV footage of the entire route of the car.
In another incident, a luxury car driver hit a motorcycle in the BRTS track on the 150-foot Ring Road, injuring three people on the bike. According to the police, three friends, Ajay Jayswal, Raju Khan and Sunny Gautam, were going from Madhapar Chokdi to Nana Mauva Circle when the car hit their vehicle near Ayodhya Chowk. All three suffered fractures and were shifted to the civil hospital for treatment. The car driver escaped from the scene.
