India vs New Zealand HIGHLIGHTS, 3rd Test Day 1: IND 86/4, trails by 149; Kohli, Jaiswal fall before stumps

India was cruising at 78 for one but in a span of two overs it was reduced to 86/4 by stumps. Some incredibly poor decisions from the batters cost the side momentum at the end of the day. Gill was troubled early on but found his mojo against the spinners. Pant will walk out tomorrow with him to put this innings back on track.

Rachin Ravindra to Gill. A leading edge goes through the vacant cover region, gets Gill a single. FOUR! Kohli gets a full toss and he clips it through mid wicket. Kohli in trouble. He is GONE! He tries to steal a quick single through mid on but a direct hit from Matt Henry sees him fall short.

Rishabh Pant comes out next with just two minutes remaining in the day’s play. Shubman Gill getting treatment for cramps. He flicks through mid wicket on the fifth delivery for one run. Pant off the mark off his first delivery.

Ajaz to bowl the next. BOWLED! Jaiswal tries to reverse sweep, does not get in the line and the delivery crashes into his leg stump. A heedless shot close to stumps.

A golden duck for Mohammed Siraj. He has been given lbw and goes for review. That’s the most plumb lbw decision an umpire will get to make. A waste of a review. Terrible from Siraj and Gill. Ajaz Patel on a hat-trick.

Virat Kohli to face the hat-trick ball. Defends it with ease and sees the over out.

Phillips to Jaiswal, cuts through mid wicket for one run. Gill hits it to long on for another single, that’s the 50-run partnership between the pair. Jaiswal drives to mid off for the third single. Gill jabs the fifth to long on for another run. Jaiswal taps through mid wicket to make it five singles from the over.

Ajaz again. FOUR! Jaiswal deploys his reverse sweep, there’s no third man in the deep and the ball runs to the fence. Eight runs from the over.

Gill facing Phillips, SIX! Moves out of his crease and heaves it over long on. 

Ajaz to Gill, FOUR, sweeps this delivery past square leg. Another FOUR! This sweep is behind square and beats the fielder trying to cut it off. A single to mid off to finish the over.

Phillips to Gill. Blundell has been hit on the helmet once again. He’s being tended to by the physio. Steps out and taps it to mid off for a quick single. Jaiswal through covers for another run. Gill picks the third single of the over.

Ajaz to Shubman, takes a single through square leg. Jaiswal negotiates with turn, there’s a half appeal for an lbw in the over but Jaiswal is safe.

A change in bowling. Glenn Phillips to bowl the next over. FOUR! Jaiswal takes this on the full and sweeps it through mid wicket. FOUR more! Another sweep, same result. Jaiswal drills the third through covers to add two more.

Ajaz with the 10th over of the innings. Full and Jaiswal drives it to long on for a single. Two more singles from the over. 

Henry gets another crack. Full from the pacer and Jaiswal slams it through covers. Just a single though. 

Ajaz Patel continues. Jaiswal paddle sweeps the fuller one for a double. Ajaz glides one into Gill’s pads. Seems like an inside edge saved him from an LBW call. Gill now gets off the mark with nudge to the leg side. 

Matt Henry continues. Jaiswal on strike. He hasn’t been at his fluent best in this innings so far. A single brings Rohit on strike. Back of a length now from Henry. Leading edge from Rohit. Easy catch at second slip.

Latham turns to spin early. Ajaz Patel into the attack. Short from him and Jaiswal slams it away for a four. Ajaz though manages to get an outside edge out of Rohit. It pops off Blundell’s gloves and over the first slip. 

Length from Henry and Rohit gets on top of it with a backfoot punch. TIMING!! FOUR!!

Short from Henry and Rohit goes after it. Straight to O’Rourke at fine leg. But it somehow spills out of his hands. DROPPED!

Jaiswal yet to get off the mark. O’Rourke with his second now. Hangs one outside the off stick and Jaiswal goes after it. Missed. Another play and a miss. This time the line is wider. 

Henry to Rohit now. Slides one into his pads. Kiwis appeal but nothing from the umpire. No review taken. Too high maybe, feels the Kiwis. Full from Henry and Rohit crunches it through covers for a four. On the pads now and clipped away for a couple of runs. 

Rohit on strike. Width and bounce from O’Rourke and Rohit slams it over point for a four to get India going. Fuller now and Rohit smothers it for quick single. 

Jaiswal on strike. Matt Henry with the ball. Jaiswal leaves the first one. Fifth stump line. Back of a length next and Jaiswal looks to pull it. Not the greatest connection. Dot ball. Few more dot ball follows. Maiden over to start with. 

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma walk out to the middle. India would love to end the day without losing a wicket. 

OUT! Mitchell picks Rohit Sharma in slip trying to play a late cut. Washington has his third wicket.

Will O’Rourke is the last batter. SIX! Ajaz picks this length delivery over long on. Ajaz is lbw. He tries to pad this away but the delivery is coming in and is crashing into the stumps. He opts for a review but since he did not offer a shot, the impact outside off does not save him.

Just three runs from this Jadeja over. There is an lbw appeal on Mitchell’s attempted ramp sweep. Review not taken. 

Washington to Mitchell, SIX! This time he does not step out. Clears his leg, gets to the pitch and hammers it over long on. Nudges the second through fine leg for one.

Jadeja to continue. Mitchell gets a single to long off. Five dot deliveries for Ajaz Patel.

Washington to Mitchell. SIX! Steps down the track and heaves this one down the ground. A single to deep square leg on the third.

Jadeja to Mitchell, gets a single through mid wicket. FOUR! Sodhi slashes away from his body and gets the edge between the slips. Too fast for the catchers really. OUT! Sodhi is given lbw. This one keeps low, turns and raps him on the back leg. Jadeja has his fourth wicket.

Matt Henry is the new man in. BOWLED! Jadeja has his fifth! Sharp turn and it’s the death rattle for Henry.

CHANCE! Mitchell sweeps off Washington and gets it off the top edge. There is Sarfaraz stationed at deep square leg but he sees the ball too late to cover the angle and get under it. He picks it on a bounce and NZ gets a single.

Mitchell misses a reverse sweep and India has gone up for review. This one turns too much and is going down leg. India loses its second review. Three runs from the over.

Jadeja to Sodhi, drives to the left of mid off where Sarfaraz makes a diving stop to restrict the shot to just a single. Mitchell gets the ball through point to pick a single and keep strike.

Washington to Mitchell, SIX! Washington drops this one short, there’s not much turn either which allows Mitchell the time to move on his backfoot and tonk it over mid wicket.

Mitchell taps back a length delivery towards Jadeja who misfields and allows the batters to sneak in a single. That’s the only run off the over though.

Washington continues after Tea, troubling Sodhi with bounce and turn. A single comes off that over as Mitchell moves to 54.

Mitchell on strike as Jadeja continues. Three dot balls before Mitchell guides one to the leg side to get a single. Another no ball from Jadeja. 

Tea called. Jadeja’s triple strike has brought India back into this game. But Daryl Mitchell’s battling fifty has ensured New Zealand is still afloat. 

Washington Sundar returns. On the pads and Mitchell ticks it away for a single. There was a double there, but Mitchell is unable to make it. Three runs from the over. 

Jadeja against Phillips now. Sharp turn and bounce. Beats Phillips’ outside edge. Jadeja drags his length short now. Sliced away for a four by Phillips. 

Jadeja pushes one in now. Arm ball and crashes into Phillips’ stumps.

Ashwin and Jadeja continue in tandem. Fuller from Ashwin and driven away for a four by Mitchell. A single next to the fine leg region and Mitchell brings up his fifty. 

Ashwin up against Phillips. Better line from off spinner. Troubles Phillips until he glides one to deep extra cover for a double. Full now and Phillips dabs it to long off to add another single. 

Jadeja pushes one through. Easy work for Mitchell, who pushes one to long off for a single. More singles follow. Five runs from the over. 

A vacant off-side for Ashwin and Phillips gathers an easy single in that area. Fuller from Ashwin. Dabbed to deep cover by Mitchell for a couple of runs. 

Jadeja continues. Three singles to start the over. The Mumbai humidity is getting to Mitchell. 

Ashwin comes around the wicket to Mitchell. A short leg and a straightish mid on in place. Mitchell sweeps a fuller one for a single. 

Jadeja to Mitchell, taps to point for a run. WICKET! Young gets an edge to first slip. This one turns a bit more than he expects which gets the outside of his bat.

Tom Blundell is the new batter. GONE! Crashes into the off stump. Squares him up completely with turn.

Glenn Phillips at No.. 7. Defends a delivery that keeps low.

Ashwin again. The second delivery turns and bounces, Mitchell is able to parry it down fine leg for two runs. Five from the over.

FOUR for Mitchell. Another reverse sweep against Jadeja. He clips the next to deep square for a single. Young cuts to deep point for another run. Mitchell pushes to long off for one run.

Ashwin to Young, FOUR! A reverse sweep which loops over the slip fielder and runs away to the fence.

Jadeja to continue. FOUR! Mitchell gets low for a sweep and times it to perfection. Gets it through mid wicket. Edged and wide of slip, Gill cuts it before the boundary and keeps it down to two.

Ashwin gets Mitchell lbw but he goes up for a review straight away. There’s a clear deflection off the glove. He gets a single to long on off the fourth delivery. Young drives through covers to pick two.

Sharp from Jadeja. Keeps it tight and gives away just a single. Manages to beat Young once in the over too. 

A quiet over Jadeja is followed by another eventless over from Siraj. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma should be worried about how his bowlers are struggling to create wicket-taking opportunities. 

Siraj back into the attack. Keeps the line close enough to force the Kiwi batters to play. But there is no lateral movement to trouble the batters. Just a single from the over. 

The heat is getting to the players as Washington Sundar is forced off the field and is treated with some ice pack. 

Jadeja continues around the wicket. Gets driven past extra cover for a single by Mitchell. That brings up the fifty partnership. 

Washington Sundar goes around the wicket. Mitchell opts for the reverse sweep and adds a single. Another no ball from Washington. Fifth for the day. Mithcell chips one to long off and gains a double. 

Full from Jadeja and Mitchell drives it to long off for a single to break the spell of pressure. Full again. Young carves it wide of long off for a double. 

Finally, India takes a review. Washington manages to evade Young’s reverse sweep. But the ball had clipped his gloves. Review lost. Another tight over from India. No runs conceded. 

Another over for Jadeja. Sharp from the left-arm spinner to start with. No easy singles on offer for Mitchell. Maiden over. 

Washington continues. Straightish line from the offie. Young decides to come down the ground. Lofts it straight back for a six to bring up his fifty. 

Jadeja around the wicket to Young. A double to begin with. Two dot balls follow. Jadeja drifts down the leg. Couple of leg byes there. A single brings Mitchell on strike. Jadeja fires one in and it strikes Mitchell square on the pad. Loud appeals but nothing from the umpire. 

Washington Sunday with the ball. Turned to the leg side for a two and it is a new ball. A very straight mid on in place for Will Young, along with a short leg. Just a single from the Kiwi batter. 

Turn and bounce for Jadeja. He pitches it on the off-stump line and the ball jumps up and turns away from Mitchell. Appeals for lbw and there’s four overthrows as well. A flatter delivery from Jadeja hits Mitchell on the pads. There’s a faint inside edge and the umpire sees it. There’s a throw from Washington at fine leg and it’s wayward and runs to fence.

That will be Lunch on Day 1.

Three singles in this Washington over. 

Jadeja for his second. Mitchell gets a single with a sweep to fine leg. A no ball from Jadeja as Young too sweeps fine for another run. The fourth delivery does not turn and slides on straight into the pad. Going down leg.

Washington again. Young clips off his pads to add two runs to his tally.

Ravindra Jadeja into the attack now. Turn for him as he beats the outside edge of Mitchell. Just a single from it.

Young sweeps again and gets a single. Mitchell reverse sweeps and wants to come back for a second. The throw comes in from third man and had it been slightly more accurate could have caught Mitchell short of his crease.

Ashwin for his 7th over. Three singles off it. Daryl Mitchell gets off the mark in the over too.

Rachin Ravindra is clean bowled! It’s identical to Latham’s wicket. Angles into the leg stump and then leaves the batter to rearrange the stumps.

Ashwin to Rachin, rocks on his backfoot and plays it through mid wicket for two. A single through square leg. 

Washington starts his over with a no ball. FOUR for Young as he sweeps through fine leg. That was pretty close to hitting his front leg as well, but he gets his bat down in time.

Ashwin to continue. Young late cuts for a single. Rachin Ravindra on strike for the first time. He defends with command. A bye down leg on the final delivery.

Washington to continue. BOWLED HIM! Latham is gone. This is angling into the leg stump but pitches on off and turns square, beating the edge and hitting the off stump.

Ashwin to Young. SIX! Charges down and heaves over mid wicket. A single through third man on the fourth delivery. A leading edge for Latham but it lands in no man’s territory. 

Washington for his second. Latham sweeps to deep square for one. Top edge! Young tries a sweep but miscues it. The ball pops up but lands wide of short fine leg. FOUR! Latham sweeps fine of square leg and gets it to the fence.

Ashwin to continue. Young punches the final delivery through covers for two runs.

Washington Sundar into the attack. Young picks a single to long on first up. Ashwin bowls a no ball in the over. Young picks a single on the final delivery.

That’s time for drinks.

Ashwin to Latham. He charges down the track but the ball keeps straight and thuds into his pad. India ponders over a review briefly but eventually decides against it. Two singles from the over.

Akash continues. FOUR! A bit wide and Young opens his bat face to guide it past gully. FOUR again on the final delivery. Too wide and Young cuts it away past point.

And we have spin in action as R. Ashwin comes into the attack. Latham works the first delivery through mid wicket for a single. A good amount of turn for Ashwin as Young plays out the five deliveries he faces.

Akash to Latham, angling in and the batter works it away to fine leg for a single. Young clips the final delivery for two. Washington does well to cover ground and get to the ball but a misfield eventually in the pick up and throw leads to the second run.

Siraj to Latham. FOUR! Punches it through covers. That’s short enough to stay back on the backfoot. Latham lets it onto the bat and punches this off his toes. A soft push through covers to complete a quick single on the final delivery.

Akash again. Young shoulders arms to this length delivery that nips in and hits the thigh pad on its way to the keeper. A leg bye for Young on the fourth delivery. Latham gets an inside edge through square leg, allowing him a single.

Just two singles in this Siraj over as Young gets off the mark with a single through fine leg.

Akash Deep strikes! Conway has been given leg before. He goes for a DRS. This one pitches outside off and jags back in sharply, beating the inside edge. Three reds on the ball tracker and it’s the end for Conway.

Siraj continues. Leg sideish and nudged to third man for a single by Latham. Too full from Siraj and driven for a four by Conway straight down the ground. Siraj slides one in and it keeps low and strikes Conway on the pad. Loud appeal from the Indians. Nothing from the umpire. Rohit decided against a review. 

Over the wicket comes Akash Deep. Latham leaves the first one easily. And the second one too. The Indian pacer brings the line in and beats Latham’s inside edge. Strikes him on the thigh pad. But it is a no ball. Goes round the wicket now. Latham leaves again. Closer to the off stump now. Latham has to bring his bat down. Edged and streaks past the slips for a four. 

Siraj with the first ball of the Test. Ticked away for a single by Latham. Wider line for Conway. Defends a couple and leaves the others. Not much bounce on offer.

We are gonna have a bat. Looks a good surface, hopefully put a good total on the board. What we did in Bangalore was great, we had to switch quickly to Pune and nothing changes. A new opportunity this game. It’s about adapting to the surface as quickly as possible. Santner has got a side strain. Ish Sodhi comes in. Henry is back for Southee.

However, on the eve of the final Test against New Zealand, head coach Gambhir had a different take on the issue. “I’m not going to sugarcoat this. Obviously, it’s hurting, and it’s good that it’s hurting because it should hurt,” Gambhir said. 

“Because every time you lose a game - be it at home or be it away from home - it should hurt, and that hurt will make us better. Sometimes people say that it should not hurt. But it should hurt when you’re playing for your country. What’s wrong in being in that position?” Gambhir wondered.
