Coimbatore: The Coimbatore city municipal corporation (CCMC) has initiated an inquiry against Prani Mithran, a local NGO which is in charge of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Center in Ondipudur. Corporation's health officials, along with the Zoo director inspected the centre on Tuesday.
Corporation commissioner M Sivaguru Prabhakaran said the inquiry was initiated following a series of allegations against the NGO. "Complaints include lack of hygiene in the animal birth control centre maintained by the NGO, inappropriate sterilization process, poor care for the animals. Following the inquiry a detailed probe report would be submitted, based on which further action will be taken," he said.
The NGO had faced similar allegations two months back and a complaint was then sent to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Dr S Thirukumaran, regional joint director, animal husbandry department, Coimbatore, who is also the secretary of SPCA said, "During our earlier inspection we could not find any evidence of inappropriate sterilization. However, we did identify issues pertaining to cleanliness and animal maintenance. They were warned to abide by the regulations."
He pointed out that with the civic body being solely responsible for ABCs, it was up to them to initiate appropriate action this time.
