Ranchi: A woman was arrested in Bihar on Monday for allegedly stealing a six-day-old boy from Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (Rims) on October 21.
City SP Raj Kumar Mehta on Tuesday said that the woman, Rajni Mala, was arrested from Vaishali district in Bihar and the child was recovered from her.
Mala had arrived at Rims to steal a child. She spotted Rabita, a resident of Ramgarh district, with her infant and started interacting with her. She remained with Rabita for most part of the day during various medical processes and even had food with the family.
When Rabita handed over her child to Mala to get an injection, the latter walked away with him. The accused also covered her face to avoid getting detected in closed circuit television camera.
Mehta said, “Mala had problems giving birth and was being rebuked by her in-laws. Her last child was a stillborn. She had arrived in Ranchi by a bus and went straight to Rims to steal a child. She took the child home and claimed before relatives that it was her child.” Taking a serious view of the crime, police had formed a team to recover the child.
