Kolar: Health department officials in Kolar district conducted a ‘decoy operation' to bust a sex determination racket at Deepak Nursing Home, near Dasarahosahalli in Bangarpet taluk of Kolar district.
According to Dr Chandan Kumar, district family welfare officer, there were complaints that one Dr Saraswathi was conducting sex determination tests at the sonography centre attached to the nursing home.
Acting on a complaint, health authorities along with a Central team had raided the scanning centre two years back and had seized the ultrasound machine. A case was pending in the courts in this regard, Kumar said.
However, the authorities again received complaints from general public in the last few months against the same doctor and the centre. Though the authorities visited the centre a few times, no irregularities were noticed.
In a bid to unearth the truth, the health officials led by Dr Chandan Kumar decided to conduct a ‘decoy operation' and took into confidence one pregnant woman and sent her to the scanning centre for check up, scheduled for Tuesday. As the pregnant woman went inside the centre, Dr Saraswathi began conducting the scanning and preparation for sex determination, when a team of doctors led by Dr Vivek Dorai, deputy director, PCP NDT, state unit and Dr Chandan Kumar, swooped down on the centre and and caught the doctor ‘red-handed', said sources in the health department.
Dr Chandan Kumar said the machine used for the scanning has been seized. A case has been taken up against Dr Saraswathi and further probe is on.
