CHENNAI: A police head constable died by suicide at her residence in Kancheepuram after her husband, also a police officer, held her responsible for the death of two puppies of their pet dog on Saturday. Police said that the couple is childless and has been raising a dog for several years now.
According to police, the deceased, identified as D Girija, was working as a head constable at the Chengalpet All Women Police Station (AWPS). Her husband, Dikeshwaran, 44, is also a head constable working at the Maduravoyal police station.
The couple married about 20 years ago, police said. Since they were childless, they were raising a pet dog which gave birth to five pups recently. Police said, Dikeshwaran told his wife, Girija, that the pet dog was about to give birth to two more pups and asked her to take good care of them.
The two puppies were born a month ago; however, on Saturday, they fell into an open drain near their house and died. Learning this, Dikeshwaran called his wife on Saturday night and held her responsible for the death of the two pups. He scolded her and hung up.
Since his calls after a while remained unanswered, he alerted his relatives, who checked on Girija and found her hanging. The Kancheepuram taluk police rushed to the scene and moved her to a hospital where she was declared dead.
A case has been registered, and further investigations are ongoing.
