Varanasi: Sensation prevailed in Chaubepur area under the same police station after the body of a youth, missing since Sunday evening, was found lying on the banks of the Ganga on Monday morning.
On being informed, DCP Varuna zone Chandrakant Meena, ADCP Varuna Saravanan T, ACP Sarnath Atul Anjan Tripathi, and other officials inspected the site while forensic experts were also called for evidence collection.
During the initial investigation, the police identified the deceased as Bablu Saroj (40) of the same area. Looking at the marks of injury on his head, Saroj's family alleged it to be a murder.
The ACP stated that a complaint was received from the family of the deceased, and the body was sent for postmortem examination. The postmortem report would clarify the cause of death, he said, adding that further investigation into the matter was in progress.
Saroj, who worked as a labourer to earn a livelihood, lived in Chaubeypur with Meera Saroj and, sons Shivam Saroj (16) and Shubham Saroj (17). He left home on Saturday evening but did not return.
His family searched for him until late at night. On Monday morning, some villagers noticed his body near the banks of the Ganga and alerted Chaubeypur police.
Locals and his family suspected that Saroj was assaulted over some dispute in gambling, and the assailants dumped his body near the riverbank and fled the scene.
