Kanpur: Kanpur Nagar district judge Pradeep Kumar Singh on Friday convicted a husband for dowry death and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 6,000.
The complainant, the victim's mother, a resident of Fatehpur district, reported to the police that she had married her daughter Fahmeeda to Ishafat Ali, resident of Chakeri locality in Kanpur Nagar.
Fahmeeda's in-laws were dissatisfied with the gifts and dowry given at the time of marriage and were demanding a motorcycle and a gold ring, she alleged. To press their demand, Ishafat Ali and his family members often tortured and thrashed her daughter, she said.
On February 25, they brutally assaulted Fahmeeda and hanged her from the roof.
According to Dilip Awasthi, district government counselor, the prosecution presented seven witnesses and successfully proved its case. The presiding judge, after examining the evidence on record, convicted Ali sentenced him to 10 years of incarceration.
