Pune: The city police has proposed RTO to cancel 200 driving licences, after booking 1,000 people for drunk driving this month.
Reports seeking cancellation of 200 licences have been sent to the Pune RTO (Regional Transport Office). The Pune city police fined as many as 1,000 motorists for driving in an inebriated condition since October 11.
The police authorities started sending proposals to the RTO to cancel licences of motorists driving in an inebriated condition, after recording a large number of such cases. Additional commissioner of police Manoj Patil told TOI, "So far, we have requested the RTO to cancel the driving licence of 200 motorists caught driving their vehicles in an inebriated condition."
TOI on Saturday made repeated attempts over phone to contact senior RTO officers in this regard, but none of them responded to the calls.
Patil said, "We intensified our drive against drunk drivers since October 11, following the accident in Mundhwa in which a food delivery person (21) was killed after a luxury car driven by a drunk businessman hit his two-wheeler. The driver fled after the accident."
The same car driver had hit a scooter, injuring three people, before the fatal accident.
The police are using disposable breathing pipes and calibrated breath analysers to take action against drunk drivers at 27 different spots daily. Earlier, such drives were limited to weekends.
At present, the police have prepared 14 flying squads with 125 traffic personnel on night duty. These teams cover all the 27 spots. The location of the spots changes every day. An officer in the rank of assistant commissioner of police leads the action against drunk drivers every night.
"We cover all the major city roads, highways and internal roads under our drive against drunk driving. Each day we get at least 40 cases of drunk driving. The number is higher than 100 on some days. These motorists are not only careless about their lives but also pose a threat to other road users," Patil said.
A minor boy's Porsche Taycan car had hit a motorcycle in May this year, killing two techies in Kalyaninagar. The police had detained the boy and took action against the bar and pub operators, who served liquor to him and his friends just a few minutes before the accident.
