Gurgaon: Over a span of four days, MCG imposed a penalty of Rs 67.7 lakh on the company tasked with the city's door-to-door waste collection for its inadequate services following a thorough survey.
The civic body, which conducted the survey from Oct 15 to Oct 18, found significant lapses in the company's performance.
The survey revealed that the agency failed to collect waste from various areas of the city and did not deploy the required number of vehicles for efficient waste collection. The highest penalty was levied in zone-4, amounting to Rs 30.5 lakh, followed by zone-2 with a penalty of Rs 16.7 lakh.
Zone-3 and zone-1 witnessed penalties of Rs 12 lakh and Rs 8.5 lakh, respectively.
An MCG official said, "The agency responsible for doorstep waste collection has faced criticism due to its subpar performance. After conducting an investigation, it was found that the agency's work was unsatisfactory across all city zones, leading to the imposition of a substantial fine."
"The current penalty is significantly larger compared to previous occasions. The hefty fine serves as a strong message to the firm," he said, adding, "The fine lays stress on the importance of delivering "efficient and reliable waste collection services to the residents of the city".
In Aug too, the civic body had issued a notice to the private agency for its failure to collect waste from various parts of the city, particularly in Zone-2.
The corporation received complaints from several areas, including Udyog Vihar-1 to 5, Sectors 14, 15 Part-1 and 2, 12A, 17, 18, 23A, Civil Lines, Palam Vihar, etc.
The agency was required to provide 110 waste collection vehicles in the areas falling under Zone-2 but it was operating with only 44 vehicles, falling short of the required number by 66 vehicles.
As per the terms and conditions agreed between the corporation and the firm, the agency will be fined Rs 1,000 per vehicle that it does not provide.
The civic body on multiple occasions earlier also imposed penalties on the agency after it was found to have dumped garbage collected from households at undesignated areas, including green belts.
However, the firm has always maintained the waste dumped at non-designated areas is done by unauthorised vendors.
