Chandigarh: Harvinder Singh Kalyan, a three-time BJP MLA from Gharaunda in Karnal district, was on Friday elected as the 18th speaker of the Haryana assembly. CM Nayab Singh Saini had proposed his name, which was supported by cabinet minister Ranbir Singh Gangwa. As there was no opposition from any other party, pro-tem speaker Raghubir Singh Kadian declared him elected unopposed as the new speaker. A native of Kutail village in Karnal district, Kalyan, 57, was first elected as BJP MLA in 2014 and then in 2019, and now in 2024 from Gharaunda seat. Kalyan had started his political journey from youth Congress. Thereafter, he left Congress and joined Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). He even contested 2009 assembly polls on a BSP ticket and lost. Finally, he had joined the BJP and was elected on BJP ticket for the first time in 2014 when the saffron party had first formed the state govt on its own in Haryana. A graduate in Engineering from Amravati University in Maharashtra, Kalyan is an agriculturist by profession. As per his latest affidavit filed before the election commission of India (ECI), he owns property worth around Rs 7 crore. Having an image of no-nonsense person, Kalyan has also served as the chairman of the Haryana State Co-operative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited (Hafed). His father, Devi Singh Kalyan, had also served as Chairman of Haryana Agro Industries Corporation Ltd in Haryana. His elder brother Devender Kalyan is an IRS officer and presently posted on deputation in Haryana from Centre.
Chief minister Nayab Singh Saini, former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, minister Anil Vij, Mahipal Dhanda, Ranbir Gangwa, and MLA Raghubir Singh Kadian extended their congratulations and best wishes to Harvinder Kalyan on being elected Haryana Vidhan Sabha Speaker and Krishan Krishan Midha on becoming deputy speaker.
Midha was elected unanimously. He is a third-time MLA. His first time was in Jan 2019 and then in Oct 2019 and now 2024. Minister Krishan Lal Panwar proposed Middha’s name and MLA Ghanshyam Das supported it.

Cancel Kalyan East BJP candidate ticket: Sena
Shiv Sena has demanded BJP cancel Sulabha Gaikwads ticket from Kalyan East, or they won't support her as a Mahayuti candidate. Shiv Sena accuses Ganpat Gaikwad of not developing the area during his tenure. Sena officials even consider fielding an independent candidate if BJP doesn't comply. BJP is confident Mahayuti will support their candidate.
