Noida: In the last three years, road crashes in the city have gone up by nearly 5%. With the winter fog — one of the major causes of accidents — just weeks away, traffic police plan to launch a month-long drive in Nov to implement better road discipline. The department will also crack down on old vehicles to check pollution.
Between Jan and Sept, the city recorded 853 accidents, as compared to 811 in the corresponding period in 2022 and 852 in 2023. At least 331 people died and 735 were injured in crashes recorded in the first nine months of this year, while 336 were killed and 610 injured during the same period last year. Data shared by the traffic department also shows the city saw at least 324 accidents between Oct and Dec last year which left 134 dead and 248 injured.
DCP (traffic) Yamuna Prasad said the department has planned a series of activities, workshops and awareness programmes for drivers, pedestrians, school children and auto drivers over the next month to increase compliance with traffic norms.
"We will also seize visibly polluting and end-of-life (ELVs) vehicles in compliance with the GRAP guidelines," he said. Noida has approximately 1.8 lakh ELVs, including 1.5 lakh petrol vehicles older than 15 years and 30,000 diesel vehicles older than 10 years.
