Chandigarh: A total of 60 candidates are in fray for the four Assembly byelections scheduled for Nov 13, with the highest number 20 contesting in the hot seat of Giddarbaha.
On the last date of filing of nominations on Friday, there were 18 candidates for Barnala, 14 for Dera Baba Nanak and eight for Chabbewal. The elections were necessitated after four sitting MLAs representing these constituencies were elected to the Lok Sabha in June this year.
The gazette notification for the elections was issued on October 18. The scrutiny of nominations to take place on October 28 (Monday).
The candidates can withdraw their nominations till October 30.
The polling day is scheduled for November 13 (Wednesday), with the counting of votes set for November 23 (Saturday). The date for the completion of elections is November 25, 2024 (Monday).
Election code of conduct has already come into effect in the districts where these constituencies are located: Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Barnala. The code of conduct will remain in force until the completion of the election process till 25 November.
The total number of voters in the four constituencies is 6.96 lakh, with a total of 831 polling stations.
